HISTORY OF ASSOCIATION FOR NEW CANADIANS
The Association for New Canadians was established in 1979 and since that time has grown significantly. The organization is now a full service immigrant settlement agency offering a comprehensive array of programs and services to the newcomer community throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The wide array of programs and services are designed to support inclusion and integration, as well as to foster cross cultural awareness and understanding.
An experienced and dedicated team, with the support of over 100 volunteers, work in partnership to deliver the following programs and services:
- Immigrant Settlement Adaptation Program (ISAP)
- Host Program
- Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada Program (LINC)
- Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP)
- Settlement Workers in the Schools Program
- Life Skills Training
- AXIS Employment Program
- Integration Programs
- Targeted Programming for Children, Youth, Women
- Diversity and Organizational Change Training
- Public Education Activities
- Research Projects
With the support of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, as well as other Federal and Provincial Government partners, the Association provides services to Government Assisted and Privately Sponsored Refugees as well as other Permanent Residents.
The organization has been recognized locally, regionally and nationally, and has received a Citation for Canadian Citizenship. The Citation for Citizenship is an award that honours Canadian individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions in assisting newcomers to Canada in successfully integrating into Canadian society.
