Connecting Immigrants with Opportunities
On March 14, 2007 the Association for New Canadians hosted the first job fair for newcomers in Newfoundland and Labrador at the Holiday Inn in St. John's. This job fair was designed to provide newcomers with the tools and information necessary to successfully explore their career options and connect with employers.
The business community, non-profit organizations, educational institutions and the provincial government participated in this event, bringing the total number of exhibitors to 31.
The Job Fair generated very positive comments and feedback from both job seekers and employers. The employers appreciated the opportunity to recruit talented and skilled newcomers, meet individuals with diverse skills and international experience, and explain workforce requirements face-to-face.
For many job seekers this was the first event of this kind. Newcomer clients did not only have the opportunity to apply for jobs, but also to practice their communication skills, network and directly learn more about the local labour market.
